Description
This expressive, polychrome wood sculpture depicts the Virgin Mary in a praying pose (Maria Orans), a popular devotional motif in rural areas. With a height of approximately 51 cm, the figure is very present for a house altar or a wall console.
The choice of colors follows classical iconography: the robe is in symbolic red (humanity/earthly love), the cloak in heavenly blue (divinity/Queen of Heaven).
Dating & Style: The workmanship, especially the use of bold oil paint and the characteristic proportional simplifications (such as the strikingly large, interlocked hands), identify the work as peasant/folk carving from the second half of the 19th century. These stylistic features testify to the simple but deep piety of rural art.
Condition and History: In its long history, the figure has been repainted several times, which is typical for religious folk art, as it was regularly "refreshed" to keep the colors bright. The paint layer shows the typical signs of age and a fine craquelure (crack formation of the paint layers). The usual shrinkage cracks and wormholes are present on the wood core, which proves the authenticity of the old wood.
A characterful, authentic testimony of folk piety and a wonderful addition to any collection of sacred art.
Dimensions: Width 19 cm, Depth 15 cm, Height 51 cm.
